What is a steam cleaner and how does it work?
Water is heated inside a tank to create superheated steam. It’s directed through a nozzle or special attachment to clean and sanitize naturally. It emulsifies dirt and grease from numerous surfaces. It kills germs and bacteria, removes allergens and odors. Steam cleaners are available in different sizes for different needs.
Are steam cleaners safe for all types of surfaces?
They’re safe to use on sealed surfaces, like stainless steel, tile and grout. They can be used on upholstery, mattresses, windows, and mirrors. Avoid using a steam cleaner on painted surfaces, unsealed hardwood, vinyl, leather, and porous materials like marble and limestone. Cold windows may also crack from steam heat.
How often should I use a steam cleaner?
It depends on how much traffic or use an area sees. A high-traffic or high-use area should be steam-cleaned regularly (weekly) for maintenance, and especially if there are allergens present. Something like a commercial kitchen or a hotel carpet can benefit from a good steam cleaning every couple of months, depending on traffic and overall condition.
How long does it take for a steam cleaner to heat up?
It depends on the size of the cleaner (especially the tank size; a larger one will take longer). The wattage power also influences the heating speed. In general, a smaller steam cleaner (like a handheld unit) will be ready in a few minutes, whereas something like a canister-style or industrial cleaner may need 10-15 minutes.
